Drum brake vs disc brake: obviously, the brake is stronger, but why is it still eliminated?

[Catalog:News] [Date:2022-12-7] [Hits:] [Return]

The brake system of automobiles is mainly divided into drum brake and disc brake. Many people call them drum brake and disc brake for short. Their principle is to stop the wheels by friction, but the structure is different

Different braking principles

Drum brake is to increase the friction force from the inside. By installing the brake drum on the wheel and rotating with the wheel, install the brake pad inside. When braking, use the brake piston to push the brake pad to generate friction with the brake drum

The disc brake is to clamp the rotating brake disc with the stationary brake disc to complete the braking action

The drum brake is equivalent to being sealed in the brake drum, while the disc brake is exposed outside. Many people know the difference between the two, that is, the heat dissipation performance of the brake is different

In the process of automobile braking, it is necessary to use friction to overcome the inertia force of the automobile. The faster the speed is, the greater the friction force is needed, and the more heat is generated by friction. If the heat cannot be dissipated as soon as possible, it is easy to have a thermal recession, and the braking efficiency will begin to decline, ranging from a longer braking distance to a brake failure

The reason why disc brake is popular is that it has better heat dissipation than drum brake

Front disc and rear drum

Therefore, when the disc brake appears, it is first used in the front wheels of the car. Because when the brake pedal is pressed, although the four wheels brake together, the load of the front wheels accounts for about 60% due to the forward shift of the center of gravity. The high-speed state can even reach 8:2, and the brake pressure of the front wheels is significantly greater
