Replace the brake pads

[Catalog:News] [Date:2022-3-25] [Hits:] [Return]

The action of replacing the brake pads is mentioned less frequently in the maintenance items. The replacement will be considered only after the vehicle is used for about 100000 kilometers.

It is no exaggeration to say that many people may not have seen what the brake pads look like from buying to selling cars. However, this small part is one of the most important parts related to driving safety on the whole vehicle.

Not long ago, I encountered a "thrilling moment" caused by the decline of braking effect:

In other words, when I was driving on the elevated expressway and enjoying the happiness of the sunset on my face, the vehicles in front suddenly slowed down one after another. Before I recovered, I quickly stepped on the brake pedal. You know, as an old driver of nearly 20 years of driving experience, I was still very confident in this foot brake, but unexpectedly, the divine car GK5 (configuration | inquiry) took a long distance to stop and almost hit the rear.

This makes me realize that the brake pad is quite old. If I don't say goodbye to it soon, I'll really "goodbye"

Therefore, in line with the good habit of not asking for others when I can do it myself, I chose to replace the brake pads myself. In fact, the process is very simple. I believe that in addition to men's assistance in disassembling and assembling tires, women can also handle other processes by themselves.

First stop the car on a flat road, open the engine compartment, then find the brake oil pot and unscrew the cover, so as to facilitate the oil flow back from the brake cylinder.

Then take out the jack and on-board wrench from the trunk, put the wrench on the hub bolt, try to find a relatively straight angle, and then step on it and press down with your own weight. Except that the bolts screwed with the pneumatic wrench of the air cannon are not easy to loosen, the bolts can be stepped loose under normal circumstances.

Do not continue to screw after all bolts are loose. Next, put the jack under the chassis support point. Generally, there will be obvious protrusions or marks, which is easy to find. Then put the handle with hook on, and insert the other end into the hole of the on-board wrench. Hold the handle firmly with one hand and shake it in a circle with the other hand, and the jack will rise. When approaching the fulcrum, pay attention to align the clamping slot to prevent the vehicle from sliding after being supported, which will be very dangerous.

Continue to shake the jack hard until the front wheel is slightly off the ground. Then remove the wrench and continue to remove the bolt. At this time, the bolt will be very easy to remove. Loosen it with a wrench for two turns and screw it down by hand. Don't lose it.

Next, kick the upper edge of the tire a few times, and the fastened tire will easily come off the shaft and be removed. After taking it off, be sure to pad the tire under the body near the jack. It's safe, you know.

Then go inside the car and turn the steering wheel. When the brake disc is turned to an angle convenient for replacement, it's OK. The next step is to start the disassembly. Before disassembly, first find a slotted screwdriver to insert into the hole above the brake cylinder and pry it to the outside. The purpose of this is to compress the brake cylinder back, so as to avoid that the brake pad cannot return after replacement. Because the thickness of the new and old brake pads is different, the piston of the cylinder will not be installed back if it does not return.

There are two fixing bolts at the top and bottom of the inner side of the slave cylinder. Just remove one bolt at the top or bottom. Clamp it inside and outside with two wrenches. The bolts can be loosened without great force. Lift the slave cylinder after removing the bolts and you can see the brake pads inside.

The fixing of the brake pad is very simple. It is stuck by the clamping slots on the upper and lower sides, so pry it out with a slotted screwdriver, and some can even pull it down easily by hand (the original brake pad is too dirty, here I use the installed pictures for demonstration).

It can be seen that the original brake pads have been worn out a lot. In fact, they can be worn for another 10000 kilometers, but considering the braking effect, it's better to replace them.

At this time, remember to check the return of the piston in the slave cylinder. If it has not been fully pressed back, you can pad it with two removed old brake pads and continue to press back with a screwdriver until it is completely returned.

The new brake pad looks more pleasing to the eye. This is the original brake pad, so there will be no abnormal noise after installation, and the braking effect is the same as the original. According to the experience of motorists, if the GK5 is replaced with brake pads of other brands, there will probably be abnormal noise, so the original configuration is less worry. Of course, I think it's necessary to upgrade the brakes of this vegetable cart. It's better to choose the whole set of products of big brands. I basically drive at turtle speed every day, so for me, the original matching is enough. If I save money, I'll buy ribs.

The installation of new brake pads is very simple. They can be installed as long as they are fixed in the card slot as before. Be sure to check whether they are installed in place.

In addition, the brake pads with metal alarm pads are generally on the inner side, so don't mix them. At the same time, check whether the dust cover of the caliper fixing bolt is intact. If it is damaged, it must be replaced and repaired, otherwise the braking effect will be affected.

Finally, put the cylinder back in place and tighten the bolts. Remember not to tighten the bolts with too much brute force to avoid damage and breakage. Then, turn the steering wheel to align the brake disc, and then replace the tire. Pay attention not to be squeezed into your fingers by the caliper when installing the tire. Don't ask me how I know... Also, tighten the tire bolts with a wrench first, wait for the car to fall down, and then fasten them one by one in the way of five pointed stars (I have four holes, the order of up and down is good), and finally step on them and tighten them in place with my own weight.

Just repeat the process for the other side. Finally, after all of them are replaced, you must remember to step on the brakes in the car first, because there is no brake just after replacement. The braking force can be restored only when the pedal can't be stepped. Don't start the fire and leave. In addition, it should be noted that the braking effect of the new brake pad is not ideal at the beginning. Remember to drive slowly and use more brakes. It will reach normal state after a period of time.
