Is it a disc brake or a drum brake? Do you really know the difference?

[Catalog:News] [Date:2021-1-22] [Hits:] [Return]

No matter when the personal safety is the first, for driving the vehicle, the most important thing is the vehicle braking system. No matter how the automobile technology develops, how the vehicle electronic system intervenes, the most basic safety configuration and the bottom guarantee of all electronic systems are the automobile braking system. Since the braking system is closely related to the safety of the driver's life and property, it is necessary for the driver to understand the braking system of his vehicle and the different performance of the braking system.

At present, there are two commonly used braking methods in the market, one is drum brake, the other is disc brake or disc brake. These two braking modes are completely different. First of all, there are great differences in mechanical structure, and the advantages and disadvantages of braking system are naturally different. So, for car owners, what is the difference between these two braking methods?

Drum brakes

Drum brake is a relatively traditional braking method, which is mainly used in the rear wheels of minivans and some vehicles. The utility model is mainly composed of a rotating part, a fixed part, an actuating part and a positioning adjusting device. The shape of the drum brake is a bell shaped iron casting directly connected to the wheel.

The braking principle of drum brake is that the brake drum is connected with the wheel hub and rotates with the wheel hub. When the driver steps down the brake pedal, the piston inside the brake drum pushes the brake shoes, and the brake shoes are close to the inner wall to achieve the purpose of deceleration.

Drum brake advantages: first, the brake force is strong, the brake is more direct. Therefore, the drum brake can be used in vehicles with certain load demand; second, the brake sealing is good, so that the vehicle brake is not easy to damage; third, the drum brake has the function of automatic braking.

At the same time, drum brakes have disadvantages. First, because the drum brake has good sealing performance, the heat dissipation performance of the brake is poor. If frequent high-speed braking occurs, the thermal attenuation of the drum brake will be very obvious; second, the service life of the drum brake after each maintenance is short and the maintenance is not easy, resulting in frequent maintenance and replacement of the drum brake pads, and the maintenance cost is not low.

Disc Brakes

The disc brake is put down to the civil field by the racing technology. At present, almost all household cars use the disc brake. Disc brakes are classified into disc type, ventilated disc type, disc type and friction plate type. Disc brake is mainly composed of brake oil master cylinder, brake oil slave cylinder, brake caliper, brake disc, etc.

The braking principle of disc brake is that when the driver steps on the brake pedal, he pushes the piston in the brake master cylinder and pushes the brake oil to the piston of the brake cylinder, so as to push the brake pad to clamp the brake disc and generate braking force.

Disc brake advantages: first, excellent heat dissipation. Because it is an open structure, it has excellent heat dissipation, even if it can bear continuous high-speed braking, the brake will not have too much heat attenuation; second, because the disc brake is an open structure and the mechanical structure is relatively simple, it is easy to repair and the maintenance interval is long; third, under the same torque condition, the weight and occupied position of the disc brake are more important than the drum brake Small.

Disadvantages of disc brake: first, the braking force is low, when the vehicle load is large and the inertia is strong, the braking force is relatively low; second, when the brake master cylinder stops working after the vehicle flameout, the vehicle will lose the braking force, which is still a big safety hazard for the vehicle.

Write at the end

Vehicle braking is the most basic and important guarantee for driving safety. It is necessary for vehicle owners to understand the structure and form of vehicle braking system in case of emergency. There is no good or bad difference in the braking system of the vehicle, and there is no need to be too nervous about whether the braking method adopted by the vehicle is suitable, because the automobile manufacturers have carried out a rigorous test on the braking effect of the vehicle when they leave the factory. Car owners need to be concerned about the normal maintenance of the vehicle's brake system, whether the thickness of the brake pad is enough, no matter what form of brake is enough to cope with the normal driving of the vehicle
