What material are ceramic brake pads made of?

Ceramic brake pads overturn the traditional concept of ceramic brake pads, which are composed of ceramic fibers, iron-free fillers, adhesives and a small amount of metal.
Ceramic brake pad is a kind of brake pad, many consumers will mistake ceramic made at first, in fact, ceramic brake pad is from the principle of cermet rather than non-metallic ceramic, brake pad due to high speed and strong braking, the friction surface produces high temperature, according to the determination, can reach 800 ~ 900 degrees, some even higher.At this high temperature, the similar reaction of cermet sintering will take place on the brake pad surface, so that the brake pad has good stability at this temperature.However, the traditional brake pad will not produce sintering reaction at this temperature, because the sharp rise of the surface temperature will make the surface material melt or even produce air cushion, which will cause a sharp decline in the performance of the brake or the loss of the brake completely after continuous braking.

(1) The biggest difference between ceramic brake pads and traditional brake pads is that there is no metal.The metal in the traditional brake pad is the main material of friction force, which has great braking force, but wears much, and is easy to appear noise.After installing ceramic brake pad, in normal running, will not produce abnormal clamour (namely scratch sound).Because ceramic brake pads do not contain metal components, traditional metal brake pads and counterparts (namely, brake pads and brake discs) to avoid the friction of metal clamour.
(2) Stable friction coefficient.Friction coefficient is the most important performance index of any friction material, which is related to the braking ability of brake pad.In the process of braking due to friction heat, the increase of working temperature, the general brake pad friction material affected by temperature, friction coefficient began to decline.In practical applications, friction is reduced and braking action is reduced.The friction material of common brake pad is not mature, and the friction coefficient is too high, which causes unsafe factors such as directional control, burning, and scratch of brake disc in the braking process.Even when the temperature of the brake disc reaches 650 degrees, the friction coefficient of the ceramic brake pad is still around 0.45-0.55, which can guarantee the good braking performance of the vehicle.
(3) Ceramics have good thermal stability, low thermal conductivity and good wear resistance.The long-term use temperature is 1000 degrees, this characteristic makes the ceramics can be suitable for various high-performance brake materials high-performance requirements, can meet the brake pads high-speed, safety, high abrasion resistance and other technical requirements.

(4) It has good mechanical strength and physical properties.Able to withstand high pressure and shear force.Friction material products in the assembly before use, there is a need for drilling, assembly and other mechanical processing, in order to make a brake pad assembly.Therefore, the friction material must have enough mechanical strength to ensure that there is no damage and fragmentation during processing or use.
